Charlotte/Meckenburg County, Nc Atlas

Authors: Adc the Map People and Adc
Average review score:

The choice of the public safety community
If you're serious about navigating the crazy streets of Charlotte and the rest of the Great State of Mecklenburg, you owe it to yourself to pick up this book. It is EXTREMELY detailed and very up-to-date. The indexing system makes life simple, and there are several pages with blown-up maps of important landmarks (like Douglas International Airport). Paramedics and EMTs use this book exclusively - we like it so much that our dispatchers send us the page number and grid square for emergency calls! It'll serve you well.

A Super Travel/History Guide
Where was this book when I was studying North Carolina history? I was born in NC, but have learned a lot I didn't know from this book. Turnage has done great research and includes lots of little known trivia that really make the history come alive. Readable, entertaining, and lots of good travel information, too. Outstanding photographs! If you're traveling in NC, this guide is a plus.

Compass American Guide South Carolina (South Carolina (Compass American Guides))
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (13 June, 2000)
Authors: Henry Leifermann, Eric Horan, Henry Lieferman, and Kit Duane
Average review score:

The best comprehensive guidebook to South Carolina
Leifermann is an excellent writer, and his commentary is insightful. This is not your typical Chamber of Commerce, tourist brochure type of guidebook. The book is comprehensive and attractive, chock full of useful information. It contains excellent photography and tell-it-like-it-is descriptions. It has the accurate maps that are a necessity to any adequate guidebook. If you buy only one resource on South Carolina, this book should be it.

The Darker Face of the Earth: A Verse Play in Fourteen Scenes
Published in Paperback by Story Line Press (April, 1994)
Author: Rita Dove
Average review score:

The Darker Face of the Earth
Rita Dove's poetry permeates this remarkable new play which uses the Oedipal myth as a structural device as well as a means to enter the world of human slavery as practiced in South Carolina circa 1829-1840. Central to the story is the unusual and compelling relationship between the plantation owner, Amalia Jennings, and her newly acquired revolutionary slave, Augustus Newcastle. Unlike the other slaves who collectively function as the Greek chorus, Augustus can read and write, thus making him not only dangerous but attractive to the high spirited Amalia. Greek mythology aside, THE DARKER FACE OF THE EARTH is a challenging play not only for the reader but for potential producers. But it is well worth the challenge. It is rare that depictions of the conditions of slavery are revealed by 1) an African American, 2) a woman, 3) a poet, and 4) a master storyteller.

The Doctor to the Dead: Grotesque Legends and Folk Tales of Old Charleston
Published in Paperback by University of South Carolina Press (February, 1995)
Author: John Bennett
Average review score:

Folklorists rejoice!
Like Edgar Allan Poe, Henry Grady? Don't miss this much under-appreciated masterpiece by the man who started the Charleston Renaissance. Stories culled from the oral tradition of the Low Country's important Gullah culture, this book is an exhilarating alternative to the infinitely heavy and guilt-ridden tomes of Toni Morrison (Bennett was also from Ohio) for any serious student of Afro-American and Southern history. It includes original sketches of landscapes and portraits of black corroborators which firmly ground the stories in local history and folk culture. But this is not just a book for regionalists! One can't help but be impressed with Bennett's phenomenal interest, dedication, and erudition even if he was a bit self absorbed. The new edition, published by the University of South Carolina, is introduced with a lucid piece by Professor and Librarian Thomas L. Johnson.

Great guide to Charleston Restaurants!
I was really able to use this book on my recent trip to Charleston. I used it daily to select my fine dining experiences. She only writes about the finer establishments and boy are they fine. Unfortunately I had to leave, but I hope to re-create many of the great dishes with the recipes.
